A tribute to Chanel's 'Little Black Jacket'

The last project of Karl Lagerfeld is a book of photographs where Carine Roitfeld shows how to create looks where the jacket can be used in different ways.

Created during the fifties by Mademoiselle Chanel, the jacket has been endlessly reinvented by Karl Lagerfeld in each of his collections ever since 1983, for the most part, in the fundamental Chanel colour: black.

“The secret of the Chanel jacket is that it stays new, or let’s say it is revived all the time,” Karl Lagerfeld told V magazine.

The book will accompany the opening of an exhibition dedicated to it, which will run from 24th March until 15th April 2012 in Tokyo.

Book to be released this autumn.

Catherine Martin's Beaded Skulls

Canadian-born and London-based Catherine Martin studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and worked at Antique Markets following her interest in interiors and objects.

During a trip to Mexico, she discovered the beading skills of a Mexican tribe called Huichol and fell in love with the beaded objects. She managed to communicate with this very private tribe and luckily brought their beautifully beaded skulls over. After two more visits she took a step further and is now developing her own designs for the skulls which are hand-beaded by the best of the Huichol beaders.

Currently Catherine is working on a range of products for the home, specializing on sculptural products that evolve around bones and animals.

The name of her company Our Exquisite Corpse comes from the Dadaists and describes a game they used to play where somebody draws a picture on the top of a piece of paper and then they fold it and pass it over to the next person and they draw the body and they pass it over to the next person and they draw the legs – the idea is to collaborate with artists, chop things up and change them.

Tsz Fung Kwok, from Hong Kong, is not a stranger to having his talent recognised: he won the Hong Kong Design Talent Award upon graduating from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2009, and was nominated for the Top 15 Asian Fashion Designers (in the student category) by WGSN.

For his final collection at the LCF’s MA Fashion Design Technology Menswear, Kwok displayed a range of garments featuring leather and neoprene textiles with bold choices of colour such as black, red, purple, orange and midnight blue hues. Despite claiming that his collection was inspired by Egyptian culture, it is clear that Kwok owes a great deal to the work that Thierry Mugler developed in the late 1980s. What separates Kwok from Mugler, however, was the way in which Kwok used digital printing to generate spray paint patterns with moments of bold starburst zigzags, colour grading, and tie dye effects. The collection also included solid black patent hats that brought to mind traditional raincoat caps. Created using 3D technology, the oversized hats contrasted with the sharp silhouettes of Kwok’s suits and overcoats to create a playful effect.

There were three costumes during the 12-minute performance: a hand-embroidered gold cape; a black minidress with a hand-studded belt; and an embellished black coat. Tisci and Givenchy had collaborated with Madonna three years ago on her last tour. “It is a great honor for me to be part of yet another historical and iconic moment,” the designer added.

Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century
Groninger Museum

December 11, 2011 - May 6, 2012

This exhibition displays the most fantastic Alaïa fashion creations of the last ten years. Alaïa is one of the last major couturiers still active.The exhibition is a follow-on to the overview of his work shown in the Groninger Museum in 1998, which was subsequently displayed at the Brant Foundation in New York in 2002.

“Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: On Fashion”
The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
May 10 – August 19

Approximately 80 designs—by Elsa Schiaparelli (1890–1973) from the late 1920s to the early 1950s, and by Miuccia Prada from the late 1980s to the present—will be displayed. Signature objects by both designers will be compared and contrasted to explore the impact of their aesthetics and sensibilities on contemporary notions of fashionability.

Organized by curators Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton, the show will have film director Baz Luhrmann as creative consultant, and film production designer Nathan Crowley as production designer (he was creative consultant for the Met's exhibitions Superheroes and American Woman).

"The Fabergé of Footwear"

Roger Vivier's way with extravagant details earned him the nickname "the Fabergé of Footwear," so it comes as no surprise that the world's most expensive shoe would be the product of late designer.

The world’s most expensive shoe was sold at a Paris auction on Wednesday for a record breaking €19,750.
The evening pump, embroidered with dozens of sparkling semi-precious stones using fine silver threads, was created in 1962 by designer Roger Vivier for Princess Soraya of Iran.

Rather than see Vivier’s masterpieces auctioned off and scattered across the globe, the Maison Roger Vivier, owned by Diego Della Vale, partnered with the French Shoe Federation and French state to purchase the majority of the collection, which also includes pieces designed for Elizabeth Taylor and John Lennon.

François Lesage, The Embroidery's Pope - RIP

François Lesage was one of the artisans making it possible for haute couture fashion houses to create unique pieces, a real artisan with a unique savoir-faire. Lesage is the last hand-embroider and incarnates the true Parisian craftsmanship.

Representing the history of fashion, François has worked for famous designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Dior, Madeleine Vionnet, Yves Saint Laurent and Elsa Schiaparell, to name a few. Without Mr Lesage there will be not Haute Couture!

François Lesage started in Hollywood at 19 years old by opening a boutique on Sunset Boulevard and sold his first embroidery to the famous costume designer Jean Louis de la Columbia. While in Hollywood, he has created unique embroideries for the most beautiful women in the world from Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Marlene Dietrich. In 1949, at only 20 years old, his father passed away, which led him to take over the family business. A family business created in 1868 by Albert Michonet, which was originally the suppliers of Napoleon III. The family business of Lesage is a true historical jewels of archives, composed of 55,000 references of swatches, representing millions of work hours.

In 2002, Chanel acquired the Lesage workshop. This takeover meant that the embroidery business could develop while preserving its independence.

The transmission of the craft was a major preoccupation for Lesage himself, and he founded an embroidery school housed inside the atelier _ a mazelike warren of rooms stacked with feathers, sequins, beads and silk in Paris' scruffy 12th district.

About a dozen women work in the atelier _ with reinforcements ahead of Paris fashion week. Simple jobs, like adding flash to a plunging neckline, generally take around 20 hours of work. More complicated pieces, like the iconic trompe-l'oeil leopard skin gown made for Jean Paul Gaultier in 1998, require upward of 500.

Tabitha Simmons won the Emerging Talent Award – Accessories
Shoe designer Tabitha took away the award for, ”innovative and directional accessories,” she’s clearly a designer we’ll be keeping a close eye on in 2012!

Christopher Raeburn won the Emerging Talent Award – Menswear
Christopher Raeburn took home the award for his ethical yet sharp menswear. His award was presented to him by Theo Hutchcraft of indie band, Hurts – himself an emerging menswear style icon.

Stella Tennant won the Model prizeFlying the flag for British eccentricity, Stella often graces the pages of Vogue with her androgynous looks as well as performing at the highest level of International Fashion. She’s one of Karl Lagerfeld’s favourite models at Chanel and she fronted the recent Autumn Winter campaign for high street brand Zara.

Victoria Beckham won the award for Designer Brand
An emotional Victoria Beckham accepted the award presented to her by International designer Marc Jacobs, in one of the most showbiz moments of the evening. She shows at New York Fashion Week and her brand has grown rapidly over the past few seasons.

Kim Jones won Menswear Designer
The Louis Vuitton menswear designer won the award in the city that he trained to become a designer in the first place!

Alexa Chung took home the coveted British Style Award
The only one of the British Fashion Awards that is voted for by the public, was secured by Alexa from her loyal fanbase. She’s quite the ambassador for British Fashion, particularly in New York where she works as a TV presenter.

Sam Gainsbury won the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator
Sam Gainsbury’s work behind the scenes, most recently for the sell-out Alexander McQueen exhibition, Savage Beauty, in New York made up the judges’ minds for them. Her award was presented by Kate Moss.

Stella McCartney swept up the Red Carpet Award
This award was to, ”give recognition to a British designer who is creating global awareness of their designs in the media.” With the likes of Kate Winslet, Susan Sarandon and Nicole Kidman all choosing her dresses to wear to awards, Stella accepted the award from another of her customers, actress Kate Hudson.

Charlotte Olympia won Accessory Designer
Famous for her colourful, extra-elevated platform shoes, Charlotte Olympia took home this prize for accessories. One of a number of her fans who wore Charlotte Olympia shoes to the awards was Samantha Cameron, who teamed them with a Holly Fulton dress.

Christopher Kane won the New Establishment award
The brand new category for 2011, ”to seek and recognise a particular movement in British fashion that is taking the industry by storm” This year it was won by Scottish designer, Christopher Kane, who designs for his own label in London as well as Versus in Milan.

Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen won Designer of the Year
The biggest prize of the night went to a beaming Sarah Burton. She worked as Alexander McQueen’s right-hand woman for years, then took over as Creative Director after his tragic suicide in 2010. She has proved she has what it takes to keep the edgy brand right at the forefront of catwalk innovation as well as winning a huge new fan base by designing the Royal wedding gown for the Duchess of Cambridge.

Check at the V&A Museum in London the show "Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970 - 1990": the first in-depth survey of art, design and architecture of the 1970’s and 1980’s examining one of the most controversial phenomena in recent art and design history, running through 15th January 2012.

Of all movements in art and design history, postmodernism is perhaps the most controversial. This era defies definition, but it is a perfect subject for an exhibition. Postmodernism was an unstable mix of the theatrical and theoretical. It was visually thrilling, a multifaceted style that ranged from the colourful to the ruinous, the ludicrous to the luxurious.

Money
In 1981, as if to greet the new decade, Pop artist Andy Warhol created one of his signature silkscreen paintings. It featured a big, beautiful dollar sign. This ironic acknowledgement of his own work’s market value exemplifies postmodernism in its final stage. As the ‘designer decade’ wore on and the world economy boomed, postmodernism became the preferred style of consumerism and corporate culture. Ultimately this was the undoing of the movement. Postmodernism collapsed under the weight of its own success, and the self-regard that came with it. Yet looking back, we can learn a lot from postmodernism’s fatal encounter with money. Today, when the marketplace has again had its way with us, it is useful to consider the words of theorist Fredric Jameson. Faced with Warhol’s paintings, he wrote: ‘they ought to be powerful and critical political statements. If they are not that, one would certainly want to know why.’

New wave
As the 1980s approached, postmodernism went into high gear. What had begun as a radical fringe movement became the dominant look of the ‘designer decade’. Vivid colour, theatricality and exaggeration: everything was a style statement. Whether surfaces were glossy, faked or deliberately distressed, they reflected the desire to combine subversive statements with commercial appeal. The most important delivery systems for this new phase in postmodernism were magazines and music. The work of Italian designers – especially the groups Studio Alchymia and Memphis – travelled round the world through publications like Domus. Meanwhile, the energy of post-punk subculture was broadcast far and wide through music videos and cutting-edge graphics. This was the moment of the New Wave: a few thrilling years when image was everything.
